Blackboard "Need-to-know"
Tips
- Vol. 1; 2005 -
2006
Pop-up blockers
may prevent
you or your
students from
opening a new
window for
Blackboard
content, quiz
or chat session. Please
tell your students
to temporarily
allow pop-ups
for these web
sites. Windows
XP browsers
contain a navigation
menu just above
the display
of the website
that allows
the user to
disable the
pop-up blocker.
* Looking
for ways to
improve your
teaching?
Blackboard
Guidelines
are now available
to help you
make the best
use of Blackboard.
These guidelines
were created
by an interdisciplinary
team of Bradley
faculty and
Blackboard
staff to assist
faculty in
using Blackboard
as an effective
teaching tool.
The guidelines
provide ten
research-based
principles
of effective
teaching and
examples of
how to use
these principles
in the classroom
and with Blackboard.
Please visit
the web site
at http://blackboard.bradley.edu/faculty/Recommended_Ef_Use_BB/
* Blackboard
automatically
displays the "Class
Average". The
Registrar's
office has
indicated that
the class average
cannot be shared
for classes
of 10 or fewer. Unfortunately
the Blackboard
software does
not allow us
to turn off
the "class
average" feature. To
comply with
this, the course
enrollment
must be increased
to 11 by adding
fictitious
students and
grades. This
will cloak
the grade book
class average.
We have established "FERPA
STUDENT" accounts
1 through 9
that may added
to any course
site for this
purpose through
the Control
Panel "Enroll
User" link. If
you would like
assistance,
please contact
x2344.
* Would
you like to
record your
lectures for
students to
view on the
web? There
are numerous
possibilities
that make it
quick and easy! Contact
Barb Kerns
at 677-2332
for more information.
* Do
you have extra
students on
your roster? You
can delete
them through
the course
Control Panel "Remove
Users" link.
* Blackboard
Glossary Managerhas been added
to the Control
Panel to allow
you to create
terms and definitions
for your course. You
may also import
and export
glossaries. Students
access the
Glossary through
their "Tools" Menu.
*
Would
you like a
student grader
or TA to have
access to your
Blackboard
site? You
may have the
student complete
a form to request
access to the
Blackboard
Control Panel. This
form must be
signed by the
student, you
and the department
chair, then
returned to
the ITAC office
in Library
20. Email
brk@bradley.edu
for a copy.
* Do
you need to
show your students
how to do something
on the computer? It
is quick and
easy to create
a video of
the process
with software
called Viewlet
Builder. The
software will
turn screen
captures and
mouse movements
into a Flash
movie that
can be uploaded
to Blackboard. Students
can view each
step of the
process when
they need it,
as often as
they like. This
software is
available in
ITAC. Contact
Barb Kerns
at 677-2332
or brk@bradley.edu
if you would
like to learn
more.
